FAQ

Planning your trip to Flanders

Quick answers to the questions we hear most from travellers in the United States and Canada.

Which city in Flanders should I visit first?

For a first visit, combine Bruges and Ghent: they are only 25 minutes apart by train and show medieval Flanders at its best. Add Antwerp for art and shopping, Brussels for the capital and Ypres for WWI history.

How do I travel between the cities?

By train. The Belgian railway (SNCB/NMBS) connects all five cities several times an hour. Brussels to Ghent takes about 30 minutes, Ghent to Bruges 25 minutes and Brussels to Antwerp about 45 minutes.

Do I need a car in Flanders?

Not for the cities: their historic centres are compact and many streets are car-free. A car or guided tour is useful only for the WWI battlefields around Ypres or for the countryside.

How many days do I need for Flanders?

Five to seven days is ideal to see all five cities at a relaxed pace. With three days, choose two cities and stay overnight in one of them.

What is the best time to visit Flanders?

Late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September) offer mild weather and fewer crowds. December is magical with Christmas markets in every city.

Do people speak English in Flanders?

Yes. Dutch is the official language, but almost everyone in hotels, restaurants and shops speaks good English.
